What does a hypnotherapy session involve?

At your first appointment, I will discuss with you details of your life and medical history.  I will ask you about what you would like help with, and what results you would like to see or feel at the end of your sessions.  I will also do an initial therapy session with you.

In future sessions, we will review your progress and I will use a range of different techniques to work with you towards achieving your goal(s).

How does hypnosis feel?

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Many people say that hypnosis feels similar to drifting off to sleep at night – that stage between waking and sleeping when you may feel a sense of weightlessness as all your muscles relax. However, although your mind and body are in a relaxed state, you can still hear every word and remain in full control.

After a session you may feel uplifted, lighter and very relaxed.  Often change is very subtle, as we will be working with your unconscious mind. Alternatively, you may notice a very positive shift in how you are feeling.

Is hypnosis safe?  Can I be made to do something I don't want to do?

When we are reading a book or watching a film, we do not give up control, and hypnosis is no different.  When you are in a hypnotic state, you always have the power to bring yourself back to full awareness, just like coming out of a daydream or meditation session. Often, the realisation that you are in control and can make changes yourself is very empowering.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for children?

Hypnotherapy for children and young people is considered to be highly effective and is completely safe. Children tend to respond very well to hypnosis as they are naturally quite imaginative and use their unconscious minds a great deal more than adults.  Hypnotherapy can help to address a number of issues commonly experienced in childhood, including exam nerves, sleep problems, bed-wetting, fears, eating disorders and low self-esteem.

Do I need to be hypnotised for you to help me?

No. I also employ a range of other techniques which can be used without hypnosis, for example EMDR/BLAST, NLP and OldPain2Go.

How long does a session last?

The first session usually lasts 60-90 minutes. Subsequent sessions typically last about 60 minutes. Smoking cessation is usually one session lasting about 2 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your circumstances and what you require help with.  I will let you know how many sessions I feel you might need when you start therapy.  This is usually somewhere between 3 and 6, but we will review and adjust both the number and frequency of sessions to correspond with your progress and needs. Smoking cessation is usually one longer session.

What do I need to do to prepare for a session?

A hypnotherapist is a guide and helps you on a journey, but the change can only be made by you. Therefore, the main thing is that you are committed to change and come to the sessions with an open mind.

To help you relax better, you may wish to avoid tea, coffee, cola and alcohol before the session.

Never come to a hypnotherapy session while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Wear comfortable clothes and remove hard contact lenses if you think they may be uncomfortable.

How often will I need to see you?

This again depends on your circumstances and what you require help with. Initially, you may wish to see me on a weekly basis, but depending on improvements and how you feel, you may choose to then come less frequently.
